Six Italian Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets arrived in Iceland on Monday to begin Italy’s turn patrolling Icelandic airspace as part of NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert Duties (QRA).
According to Business Insider, two KC-767A aerial refuelers and a C-130J cargo plane support the jets at the Keflavík airbase. The Italian Air Force is also patrolling Slovenian and Albanian airspace and will begin patrolling Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian airspace in 2015.
Iceland will see a regular rotation of the world’s military forces in the country as part of Operation Iceland Air Policing 2013. As the Grapevine reported, the Canadian Air Force was on patrol earlier this year.
