The Social Democrats and Leftist-Greens would have the majority of seats on Reykjavík city council if elections were held today, according to the latest polls.
The latest Gallup poll shows that the Independence Party gained two points from the previous poll, and now stands at 41% – the equivalent of seven of city council’s 15 seats. The Progressives come in at 5%, leaving them with not enough support to win a seat.
Support for Social Democrats actually went down a point, to about 33%, equalling five seats, while support for Leftist-Greens rose by two points to 19%, or two seats.
By this, the current conservative/Progressive majority would fall. By law, Social Democrats and Leftist-Greens could then create a new eight-person majority.
As it stands, the situation leaves a lot of room for uncertainty, and the already volatile nature of the frequently-changing majority seats in city council only underscores this.
