From Iceland — Presidential Underdogs Gaining Support

Presidential Underdogs Gaining Support

Published June 22, 2012

While the two front-runners for the next president of Iceland have seen a small drop in support, two other candidates have seen a boost.
Presidential elections are only days away, and at the moment, it looks like it a toss-up between incumbent Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson and his most viable challenger, Þóra Arnórsdóttir. However, RÚV reports that support for the two has dropped slightly, while other challengers are seeing a rise in support.
Ólafur is the current leader, with 44.8%, while Þóra has 37%. In both cases, these figures are actually down from last month, when they had 1% and 2% more support, respectively. So while the gap between the two has widened slightly, both have lost some support from Icelandic voters.
Meanwhile, Ari Trausti Guðmundsson and Herdís Þorgeirsdóttir have seen a slight rise in support, of about 1% each, from last month. They stand now at 10.5% and 5.3% respectively.
The gains for the underdogs would appear to be at the expense of the front-runners, but for now, both Ólafur and Þóra appear to be in secure positions ahead of the pack.
