Thunder and lightning – an extremely rare occurrence in Iceland – struck in the southwest portion of the country. Bystanders recorded the event on video, which can be viewed here.
The lightning also apparently disturbed phone systems in the area, as it effects microwaves used for GSM connections, according to a statement from the company Míla.
The rarity of lightning in Iceland is due in part because thunderstorms need not just moisture but also rapidly rising air, building very large cumulus clouds in order to ignite a spark. As rapidly rising air is pretty warm, this rarely happens in Iceland.
