The Icelandic Confederation of Labour (ASÍ) has found that the cost of groceries in Iceland have increased by up to 4.9% since January. During this same period inflation was just 2%.
In conducting their regular price surveys of groceries across a wide range of shops in the country, ASÍ found that the greatest price increases were at the so-called “discount” shops, RÚV reports. The cost of grocery baskets at Bónus and Iceland increased by 4.2%, while Víðir’s basket increased by 1.9%. The greatest increase has been at Nettó, where the cost of the average basket of groceries has increased by 4.9%.
However, the cost of a basket at Hagkaup actually declined by 2.3% since January.
In conducting their price surveys ASÍ sends ‘secret shoppers’ to fill a basket of general grocery items – breads, cereals, pasta, meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, coffee, soda, juice, and cosmetic products.
