Eruption Has Begun Along Sundhnúkur Crater Row

Published November 20, 2024

A new eruption began along the Sundhnúksgígar crater row at 23:14 Wednesday. The length of the fissure is currently unknown.

This is the seventh eruption along the crater row since December 2023.

Increased seismic activity began in the area on the morning of Nov. 20, alerting meteorologists that an eruption could soon commence.

The lav is flowing to the north and east. There is currently no lava flow toward Grindavík or any other infrastructure.

Evacuating again

Suðurnes police chief Úlfar Lúðvíksson has confirmed that an evacuation is underway in Grindavík. It is believed that up to 60 people were in the town at the time the eruption began.

Grindavík was evacuated on Nov. 10, 2023, amid an intense earthquake swarm that caused significant damage to the town and infrastructure.
Residents have since been permitted to return to their homes and the town has been open to the public since Oct. 21.
