A new poll conducted by Market and Media Research shows that Icelanders are quite happy with many different aspects of their lives, except for one.
The poll, conducted in the middle of August, shows that about 90% of Icelanders are satisfied with their neighbours, their jobs, and their summer vacations.
Satisfaction with the weather in Iceland has been steadily decling – from 94.7% in August 2010 to 62% today – but that still makes for a majority of the country.
However, if there is one thing most Icelanders aren’t happy about, it’s Reykajvík mayor Jón Gnarr. Satisfaction with his job performance has gone from 77.6% in August 2010 – with 22.4% unhappy at that time – to an almost complete reversal. Now only 38.3% say they are satisfied with the mayor, while 61.7% are unhappy with his performance.
City councilman Dagur Eggertsson took issue with the way these results were reported by Vísir, who used the headline “Much dissatisfaction with Jón Gnarr”, writing on his Facebook page, “Isn’t that a little bit of a special representation? 38.3% satisfaction is also one of the currently highest levels of satisfaction with politicians. In the ruling coalition or the opposition.”
This is a fair point, if the great drop in support over the course of a year is factored out: the highest polling party in country right now, the Independence Party, comes in at around 36%.
