Former Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde appeared on CNN, and wasted no time in blaming Iceland’s economic collapse on the inability of financial analysts in the US to foresee a global crisis looming.
Haarde also claimed that he in fact took measures to help save the economy – such as signing a deal with the IMF – and that the banks all operated within the framework of EU law. When asked point blank if he might bear at least some responsibility for the collapse – as the former Finance Minister and later the Prime Minister – Haarde contended that the activities within the banks were a mystery to him.
He also repeated his oft-repeated assertion that his trial is political in nature; not criminal, and that this is merely former political enemies scapegoating him to score political points.
