Construction is already underway to block car traffic from a downtown street and make it exclusively for pedestrian traffic.
Reykjavík city council has promised to close off a number of downtown streets from car traffic, as they want to make the city more friendly to pedestrians and encourage businesses to hold outdoor events as the weather gets nicer.
Those plans have already been initiated. Austurstræti – between Lækjargata and Pósthússtræti, anyway – will be closed to car traffic from this point forward. The green metal poles which delineate parking spaces along this stretch of the street will be removed, as will the metal gate at the street’s entrance. The intersection where Austurstræti meets Lækjargata will be reconstructed to block traffic from entering the former, while smoothing the flow of traffic along the latter. The trees along Austurstræti will remain.
Car owners who travel through this area are asked by the city to show patience as construction takes place. The project is expected to be completed by May at the very latest.
