Minister of Social Affairs Árni Páll Árnason has said that there needs to be greater cooperation between charities which give food to the poor, in order to ensure that everyone who needs help gets it.
The statement comes days after the food charity Fjölskyldahjálp had foreigners wait while Icelanders were let in first. The story sparked outrage within city hall and parliament, where politicians emphasized that those in need of help are not to be discriminated against based on national origin.
The minister believes that greater cooperation between different charity groups is needed in order to be certain that there is a clear outline for how operations are conducted.
Hundreds of Icelandic residents seek help with food from such charities every week.
