A new poll shows that support for Iceland’s political parties varies greatly, when those surveyed are asked to rank them based on their handling of different social and political matters.
According to the survey, conducted by Market and Media Research, support for who best handles different matters sometimes exceeds their level of popular support. Starting with voters in general, these are the percentages of respondents who said they support the following parties:
Independence Party (26.3%), Progressives (17%), Social Democrats (17.1%), Bright Future (15.9%), Left-Greens (11%) and Pirates (6.9%).
However, when divided by the issues, these levels of support sometimes varied greatly from their general support.
In the subject of “law and order in general”, the Independence Party came out on top with 39.9%. They were also considered the most capable when it came to health care and education.
When it came to the use of natural resources, though, the Left-Greens saw the greatest level of support in that category, at 25%. The Left-Greens also saw the highest level of support when it came to environmental matters, with 38.1% saying they were best suited for that issue.
In fact, the ruling coalition only broke the 50% mark in one category – law and order – ranking with a combined total of 52.4%
