Unemployment in June was 1.2% higher than in the same month last year.
According to new data released by Statistics Iceland the unemployment rate in June 2013 was 6.4%, representing 178,700 residents working.
The increase in unemployment has hit men harder than women. 6.7% of men are unemployed, compared to 5% in June 2012. Comparatively, 6.1% of women are currently unemployed, while 5.6% were unemployed in the same month in 2012.
Maybe this means Icelanders will be slimming down?
These figures contradict data released last week by the Directorate of Labour, which showed that unemployment rates were low and continuing to drop. The reasons for the discrepancy could be that the Directorate of Labour calculates their figures based on those who are registered as unemployed, while Statistics Iceland compiles their figures from surveys.
