Those following the movements of extraterrestrial beings can breathe a little easier today, as it was confirmed that there was no UFO over Iceland yesterday.
Yesterday, MBL reported that video had been taken of a mysterious object flying over the east Iceland town of Reyðarfjörður. The video caught on in Icelandic social media, with many speculations on what the unidentified flying object might be. Amongst the more common interpretations was that it was a meteorite, or a spaceship.
MBL followed up on the story, by turning to science instead of speculation. They showed the footage to astronomer Sævar Helgi Bragason, to get his take on the video.
“This isn’t a meteorite anyway, as they move a lot faster than this and burn up in a short amount of time,” he said. “It is also clear that it is not a comet. They don’t fly so close to the Earth, fortunately.”
When asked for a definitive answer on what the object then was, Sævar offered a mundane explanation.
“Seems to me it’s an airplane,” he said. “I have a great deal of experience looking up at the sky and have seen a lot of strange airplane contrails that aren’t as long as this one. Still, it is definitely not a spaceship. That would surprise me a great deal.”
