Support for Jón Gnarr’s Best Party has taken a dive recently, but neither he nor other members of the party believe it to be a bad portent.
According to the latest Gallup poll on the subject, while the party received the support of 35% of voters in the city elections last spring, their support now hovers at around 19%.
Speaking to RÚV, the mayor said he believed the drop was natural, due to difficult circumstances in society. Recent controversies over music courses and the combining of primary schools have been very unpopular. However, Gnarr said that politics is not a “popularity contest”; that it rather revolves around results.
Best Party city councilperson Einar Örn Benediktsson told DV, “I think [the poll results] are great. It shows that we’re doing good things. We’re doing what needs to be done. We’re not in this to be popular. We’re not in this to pull off the next election and fool the voters. We’re working for the day today; not an election three years from now.”
