From Iceland — Valitor Begins Processing Payments To WikiLeaks

Valitor Begins Processing Payments To WikiLeaks

Published May 10, 2013

Valur hf., the Icelandic partner of MasterCard Inc. and Visa Europe Ltd., began processing credit card payments to WikiLeaks yesterday in accord with last month’s Supreme Court ruling, Vísir reports.
According to the ruling, Valitor hf. had 15 days to recommence processing payments to WikiLeaks or face a daily penalty of 800 000 krónur.  After breaching a contract in which they had agreed to process payments to the anti-secrecy website, Valor hf. was sued by DataCell, an Icelandic payment services provider for WikiLeaks.
Having lodged complaints with the European Commission against Mastercard and Visa, DataCell’s lawyer confirmed yesterday that Visa Europe had written him a letter saying they would also begin processing payments to WikiLeaks, Bloomberg reports.
