The thirteenth installment of Aldrei fór ég suður, a music festival held annually on Easter weekend in Ísafjörður, will take place in a brand new venue this year, the festival organizers announced at a press meeting this morning. No, a massive concert hall has not risen overnight in the small town of Ísafjörður: both nights of the festival will see a shrimp fishery warehouse transform into a music venue for acts such as Emilíana Torrini, Úlfur Úlfur, Agent Fresco, and GKR.
In addition, the organizers announced this morning that actor and songwriter Laddi, who is known for assuming comedic personas in his performances, will leave his characters behind and perform a straight-up music set.
Aldrei fór ég suður, the name of which means “I never went south,” showcases the vibrancy of this northern town. In addition to the festival, which features acts big and small, from near and far, several one-off performances and other cultural events will show the rest of Iceland that the Westfjords have woken up from their winter slumber.
The weekend is expected to at least double the city’s population of about 3,000. The festival began in 2004 as a DIY endeavor and the team of volunteer organizers maintain that spirit, albeit on a much larger scale. As always, admission to the festival is free.
