That’s right DesignMarch – or should we say DesignJune? – is finally here. After months of coronavirus-induced uncertainty and disappointments, Reykajvik’s design community will finally have the opportunity to exhibit their work across the city this week.
DesignMarch events will be held in various locations across the city from today, June 24th until Sunday, June 28th.
Today’s highlights include:
- Hildur Yeoman’s opening party (16:00-18:00)
- Björn Steinar Blumenstein’s open workshop (12:00-16:00)
- Hönnunar Happy Hour – opening event for four exhibitions (17:00-19:00)
We also highly recommend a visit to Ýrúrarí’s Sweater Sauce Exhibition and Valdís Steinarsdóttir’s ASMR R U Ready? show, both of which will be open all week.
Around 80% of participants have changed their plans for the festival in the last two month, Þórey Einarsdóttir told us in a recent interview.
The unpredictability of the past few months has demanded flexibility from both organisers and designers, but it has also inspired new inventive exhibitions. One of our favourite examples is Björn Steinar Blumenstein’s ingenious project Catch Of The Day: Limited COVID-19 Edition in which he converts food-waste into hand sanitiser.
“It’ll be interesting to see how the design community is going to react because fundamentally [designers] can bring change,” Þórey told us. “They think in solutions.”
The full programme of events and a map of exhibtions is available on the DesignMarch website.
