The Reykjavík Dance Festival (RDF) is in full swing, five glorious days of performances, workshops, and more. Navigating the schedule can be a daunting task, so read on for a short list of things to look out for today.
‘Crisis Meeting’ by the Kriðpleir Theatre Group
The Kriðpleir Theatre Group’s new work is described as “oscillating between anarchy, sit-com and Samuel Beckett”. In ‘Crisis Meeting’ Árni Vilhjálmsson, Friðgeir Einarsson and Ragnar Ísleifur Bragason portray a less glamorous side of the performing arts: writing arts council applications. Sure to be an entertaining—if not all too real—performance for artists and procrastinators alike.
14:00 at Dansverkstæðið. Admission 2,900 ISK, tickets can be purchased here. Check out the Facebook event.
In another theatre piece, Nazanin Askari tells her story of fleeing Iran after the 2009 presidential election. After the reformist Mousavi lost the election to Ahmadinejad, Nazanin was arrested and interrogated for protesting the result. The piece is a deeply real and insightful peak for anyone interested in feminism or the modern Middle East.
16:00 at Skuggi, Austurstræti. Admission 2,900 ISK, tickets can be purchased here.
‘An Eternal Piece on Love and Lack of it’ by Steinunn Knútsdóttir
Throughout the festival, The Professional Amateurs led by Steinunn Knútsdóttir have put on works of performance art on various aspects of the human condition. This piece deals with the journey of love from beginning to end.
19:00 at Borgarleikhúsið. Free Admission.
‘Blæði: Obsidian Pieces’ by Erna Ómarsdóttir, Damien Jalet and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
With ‘Obsidian Pieces’ Iceland Dance Company perform three works by Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet. In the second act they perform a must-see piece entitled ‘Black Marrow’, that Damien co-created with ID’s Artistic Director, Erna Ómarsdóttir. The piece deals with the decay of society and our addiction to oil without ever feeling preach-y or distracting from the movement quality. The choreography is inspired, and the dancers perform it spectacularly.
20:00 at Borgarleikhúsið. Admission 4,900 ISK, tickets can be purchased here.
