This national holiday marks the secession of Iceland from Denmark in 1944, and with it the liberation of Icelandic people everywhere from the oppression of half-arsed sandwiches, disgusting pastry that nobody likes, and the miserable Danish winter. Icelanders celebrate the occasion with a wide range of family-friendly activities, such as concerts, parades, yoga, and open air chess. Wear one of those oversized puffin hats, wave a flag, eat some skyr—you’ll totally fit right in.
