East Iceland Airlines (Flugfélag Austurlands) aims to start flying across the country by this summer.
RÚV reports that one of their main goals is to offer cheaper flights for sport teams that need to fly across the country. The head of the airline believes that low overhead and smaller machinery can reduce the price.
For many years, East Iceland Airlines only flew for health emergency medical services. But now the airline wants to offer sightseeing tours, along with regular charter flights.
Head of East Iceland Airlines Kári Kárason has already planned on purchasing a new six-seat airplane. In the future, they hope to keep expanding.
“Sightseeing flights have mostly been in the other quarters of the country but not yet in the east,” Kári says. “We are mainly thinking about charter flights. We want to fight to keep the airport open in the east.”
East Iceland Airlines have planned flights between Vopnafjörður and Egilsstaðir, as well as between Akureyri and Egilsstaðir. In addition, they plan to also fly to the Westman Islands, the Westfjords and even Reykjavík.
While all these flights should be cheaper, the exact pricing has not been decided on.
