The Icelandic Red Cross will be taking part in an international effort to help the people of Syria, where living conditions are decidedly appalling for millions of people.
According to a statement from the Icelandic Red Cross, it is estimated that 13 million Syrians are in desperate need of humanitarian aid, including some five million children. At least 250,000 people have been killed so far in the civil war that has rocked the country over the past five years.
The International Red Cross estimates that about half of all Syrians have had to flee their homes, with some 4 million attempting to leave the country altogether, while another nine million are displaced within their own country.
In response, the Red Cross, in cooperation with the Syrian Red Crescent, are hoping to get much needed food, water, and other forms of assistance to the Syrian people. Plans are also in the works to support some 18 hospitals and health clinics in the country, in order to better help people who have been caught in the crossfire.
