Belched straight from hell’s gut, Misþyrming leads a new wave of Icelandic black metal that is dark but not inaccessible, earning numerous accolades in the process, such as Surprise Of The Year from us at the Grapevine. They have also been selected as the artist in residence for the 2016 Roadburn music festival.

They are joined by relentless and uncompromising hardcore band Muck, who were picked as the Artist To Watch in 2013 by the Grapevine, and have since not disappointed; they’ve grown tighter and more dynamic as artists, released celebrated album Your Joyous Future, and played more face melting shows than we can count.

The show begins tonight at 22:00 at Húrra. Admission is a lowly 2,000 ISK—all proceeds go straight to the bands.

“In black metal, musicians have high standards.” Dagur G. of Misþyrming and Naðra tells me. “Not just the songs, but the lyrical content, the image, how the members choose to appear. It’s all related. You’d never see that in death metal.” Bandmate Tómas I. from Misþyrming and Naðra nods and interjects, “Yeah, you’d never see a death metal band rent out an art gallery and spray-paint the walls with blood and cover the ground with earth and rotting meat.”

Muck & Pink Street Boys by Hörður SveinssonThe Rock Renaissance
Rock in Iceland has been overshadowed by some of the great things happening in the indie, hip-hop, metal and pop genres over the last decade, but there appears to be a rock renaissance in Reykjavík at the moment. It’s dirty, it’s loud, it’s provocative, and it’s fantastic. Among the heralds of this change are Muck and Pink Street Boys. They’ve been kicking ass and taking names, each releasing great albums in the past quarter. You can read our feature on the two bands below, as well as an interview with the drummers of the bands.
