Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson is one hell of a guy. When he’s not making music with FM Belfast or some of his numerous other projects, the good man is busy building, fixing or remixing instruments, electronic gadgets and computers. He’s really smart with all that stuff, so we thought we’d ask him to help us make a little gear guide for all you folks that need gear-related assistance during Airwaves and stuff.
Fixing or making stuff on your own:
When I need things to fix or make electronics, I usually turn to my favourite store, Íhlutir (Skipholt 7, 105 Reykjavík). They have a great selection of plugs, wires, resistors, capacitors and transformers. When they don’t have what I’m looking for, I turn to my second favourite store, Miðbæjarradíó (Skúlagata 63, 105 Reykjavík).
Where to go to get your laptop fixed:
There is a small shop in a basement somewhere on Skólavörðustígur, but I can’t remember the name of it. Fixing stuff has not been popular in Iceland since the ‘80s, but something tells me it’s coming back.
The best place to get music equipment fixed:
I don’t know! I usually try to fix my own stuff, and if i fail I just cry and wonder if I could have it fixed somewhere and then try not to think about what I just destroyed. But I know most of the music stores offer some service. So I’d say Tónastöðin (Skipholt 50d, 105 Reykjavík) or Hljóðfærahúsið (Síðumúla 20, 108 Reykjavík).
The best place to buy leads and strings and stuff:
I just got great service at Tónastöðin (Skipholt 50d, 105 Reykjavík). It’s pretty close to the city centre, and they seem to have everything a musician needs except food and shelter – although they even gave me coffee today.
What FM Belfast’s show will be like:
