After a turbulent negotiation period the Air Mechanics’ Union have reached consensus on a new collective bargaining agreement, reports RÚV.
The chairperson of the Air Mechanics’ Union negotiations team, Maríus Sigurjónsson, said he felt positive about the likelihood that the union members would agree to the terms of the new deal. Maríus revealed the deal conceded several of the demands made by the union.
The negotiation period has been a turbulent one. After staging a work stoppage in June the Icelandic parliament threatened to impose laws against the Air Mechanics’ Union declaring work stoppages and strikes illegal. In return the Air Mechanics’ Union canceled their planned work stoppages in order to avoid parliamentary action announced they planned court action calling the government threat to ban their strike “equivalent to government pressure.”
