An Icelander who gained brief internet fame due to his drunken antics on an airplane will be allowed back on Icelandair flights again, albeit in the company of a chaperone.
“He has apologised for his behaviour,” Guðjón Arngrímsson, a public relations official for Icelandair, told Vísir. “He hasn’t flied with us since [the incident] happened. Now he will get to fly again, in the company of a chaperone.”
As reported in January 2013, the man in question allegedly drank an entire bottle of the licorice spirit Topaz before boarding a flight from Keflavík to New York. He then began shouting and spitting on others, screaming that the plane was going to crash.
Eventually, other passengers overpowered the man, and he was duct taped to his seat and gagged. A nearby passenger then took a photo of the man, post-taping, which made its way to Reddit and subsequently went viral.
While it was reported over a year ago that the air hooligan would be facing charges, follow-up from reporters has so far shown that the matter is still under investigation.
