The Youth Organisation of the Independence Party of Iceland (SÚS) have called for the legalisation of all drugs, posting a statement on their website offering their argument for the policy.
Their statement reads as follows:
At the same time that punishments for drug offences have gotten more severe, drug use has increased. Furthermore, societal problems associated with drugs have risen, whether crimes or health problems. On the other hand, good results have been achieved to reduce drinking and smoking in young people without resorting to bans and punishment.
The young conservatives want defend the individual’s right to choose. By eliminating the drug ban, the legs would be kicked out from under underworld market, which makes dozens of billions each year. At the same time, foreign gangs would immediately lose interest in starting their work in Iceland. Furthermore, it would bring drug use to the surface, which would simplify supervision and help provide aid to those who need it due to drug use.
No response from any Independence Party MP in support of or against the proposal has yet been made.
