From Iceland — Journalist Tops Poll For Presidential Candidates

Journalist Tops Poll For Presidential Candidates

Published March 6, 2012

A well-known Icelandic journalist has topped the list of a Facebook group’s poll calling for challengers to the incumbent Ólafar Ragnar Grímsson.
As reported, Ólafur announced that he will run again for president this year. But even now, just as at the beginning of this year when it seemed he might not run, no other viable candidate has yet stepped forward to possibly run as well.
A Facebook group nearly 2,000 members strong, called “A Better Choice at Bessastaðir”, referring to the presidential residence, has put up an open poll asking respondents who they would like to see as president.
With over 1,500 votes cast at the time of this writing, journalist Þóra Arnórsdóttir has topped the list, with 277 votes. Others named who came close were former Minister of Justice Ragna Árnadóttir with 148 votes, Stefán Jón Hafstein with 170 votes and Páll Skúlason with 121 votes.
While Ragna has thanked the public for the show of support but declined to run nonetheless, Þóra has not as yet responded to the results of the poll.
