Over a million honey bees have been imported for the purpose of supporting the making of Icelandic honey.
RÚV reports that the Bee Society of Iceland imported the bees from Åland, a group of islands off the coast of Finland. Þorsteinn Sigmundsson, a beekeeper with over a decade of experience, said he believes beekeeping will take off in Iceland.
“It didn’t go well in the early years,” he said. “But little by little we began to learn how we could adapt bees to Icelandic nature. So now it’s starting to go very well.”
Þorsteinn also expects that over 100 bee farms should begin production in Iceland. The honey made, if production meets expectations, could even be available for export.
