Social Democrat MP Steinunn Valdís Óskarsdóttir resigned from parliament today, “for reasons that should be clear to everyone,” Vísir reports. Steinunn said in a statement to the press that she intends to submit her resignation to the president of parliament on Monday.
Steinunn has been harshly criticized for accepting large compaign finance donations from private companies during the Social Democrats’ primaries in 2006. Protests in front of her private home gained national attention, although she continued to contend she’d done nothing wrong.
She apologized to voters for having conducted her campaign in the manner that she did, and for not making this decision public sooner. However, she said that “in my heart, I do not feel I can apologize for being guilty of moral corruption for seeking financial support from these parties at that time.”
