One of Reykjavík’s “champagne clubs”, Strawberries, has re-opened, after being shut down by police.
RÚV reports that Strawberries is back in business after being shut down for about a month. While police have seized the club’s assets, worth tens of millions of krónur, the club does still have a valid operating licence.
Strawberries was shut down by police late last month under suspicion of providing prostitution. Eight arrests were made in connection with that operation, including the club owner.
Police contend that Strawberries has violated Article 4 of the Law on Restaurants, which states that such establishments can neither offer naked people as entertainment nor require their employees to be naked in the course of their work. A lawyer for Strawberries contends that none of the women there actually work for the club; rather, they are “independent contractors” who make money from tips.
Another club, VIP Club, was also raided by police, and remains closed at the time of this writing.
