VIP Club has been closed by capital area police, under suspicion of providing prostitution to its clients.
RÚV reports that just over 20 police officers raided the club on Friday night. Law enforcement suspects the establishment may have served as a “middle-man” for prostitution, and have summarily shut it down. However, no arrests have been made.
The news comes not long after another champagne club, Strawberries, was shut down by police late last month, also under suspicion of providing prostitution. Eight arrests were made in connection with that operation.
Both places have been the target of public scrutiny and police investigation after it was brought to light last summer by undercover investigations by Vísir that there was suspicious activity at play that might indicate prostitution or human trafficking.
One employee at VIP Club allegedly told the reporter for Vísir that they could have “anything they want” for 20,000 ISK. A Grapevine writer, following up the story, would also find this to be the case.
The club owners have categorically denied any wrongdoing, and claim that remarks made against them are tantamount to slander.
Both clubs will remain closed pending police investigations.
