One of the silver medals that the Icelandic men’s team in handball won at the Beijing 2008 Olympics is offered for sale at the Collectors Emporium.
A picture of the medal can be seen on the store’s Facebook page but the price will only be disclosed in the store, at Hverfisgata, it says.
Chairman of the Icelandic Handball Association, Guðmundur B. Ólafsson, first heard of the sale in media on Monday evening and plans to investigate the matter today, RÚV reports.
He told RÚV that only the team players received such a medal so it’s obvious that this particular medal originates from one of the “silver boys” but not any of the coaches or other team staff.
Guðmundur said he had not heard whether one of the medals had ever been stolen.
He intends to find out where the medal comes from and decide on reactions after that.
Members of the national handball team were saluted like national heroes upon arrival back in Iceland after winning the silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, being the first ever Icelandic team to win a medal at the Olympics and bringing Iceland the first Olympic medal for handball, the nation’s favourite sport to watch.
The members of that team have since often been referred to as the “silver boys” and were awarded the Order of the Falcon by President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson for their achievement.
