Only 29.3% of the population had merely finished compulsory secondary education level by 2012, according to a survey carried out by Statistics Iceland. That’s a decrease from 34.6% in 2003, mbl.is reports.
A total of 35.8% (57.600 of people aged 25-64) have finished vocational training and/or further education of two years or longer or additional study.
Meanwhile, 35% (56,300 of people aged 25-64) have finished a university degree, an increase from 27.7% in 2003.
There’s a noticeable difference between people’s education level in the Reykjavík area and the rest of Iceland. Namely, 24.2% of residents in the greater Reykjavík area, aged 25-64, having only finished compulsory secondary education while 40.9% have a university degree.
Outside the Reykjavík area only 24.7% have finished a university degree while 37.8% have merely finished compulsory secondary education level.
