Iceland will lead the Open Skies Consultative Commission (OSCC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
The announcement, issued today, said that Iceland will lead the commission from September 2 of this year to January 8, 2014.
The OSCC implements the Open Skies Treaty, which includes some 34 signatory countries. The treaty, which went into effect in 2002, covers a territory “from Vancouver to Vladivostock”, the official site states.
The Treaty “establishes a regime of unarmed aerial observation flights over the entire territory of its 34 signatories,” while “the mission of the treaty is to “enhance mutual understanding and confidence by giving all participants, regardless of size, the possibility to obtain information on military or other activities of concern to them.”
