President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson will receive a petition tomorrow protesting the reduction of fishing fees, RÚV reports.
As the Grapevine previously reported the government’s proposed revocation of the fees charged to quota holders and ship owners for the right to fish sparked a strong reaction from the general public and members of the opposition.
Now that Althingi has passed the bill to finalise the alteration of the fees at a vote of 37 to 25, petition organisers are sending their 35,000 signatures to the President ahead of his receiving the bill to sign into law next week. The petition will urge Ólafur to veto the bill and refer it to a national referendum.
