The Ministry of Justice has approved the initiation of work to assess conditions in a fissure in Grindavík where Lúðvík Pétursson fell on January 10, 2024, reports mbl.is.
The purpose is to determine whether it is possible to excavate and recover his remains.
“We welcome this decision. We consider it extremely important that efforts be made to dig for Lúðvík. By doing so, the family may gain some sense of closure by being able to bury Lúlli. It is also absolutely certain that no resident of Grindavík wants Lúlli to lie in a fissure in Grindavík,” says Elías Pétursson, Lúðvík’s brother. The family had been in contact with the Ministry of Justice and requested that excavation work be undertaken to reach a gravel mound where it is considered likely that Lúðvík may be found.
Lúðvík Pétursson fell into the fissure while working on soil compaction in Grindavík on January 10, 2024. He was not seen again afterwards.
