WOW Air’s chief financial officer, Stefán Sigurðsson, sent an email this morning dismissing rumours that employees would not be paid on Friday, RÚV reports.
The entire email was published on Eyjan. Svanhvít Friðríksdóttir, WOW’s media officer, confirmed the authenticity of the email, stating that they wished to reassure their workers. Stefán says that he has received many questions from employees due to recent media coverage.
WOW Air’s future has been in question for months, but the airline appeared to get a reprieve when it was announced that Icelandair would buy its main competitor. However, earlier this week Icelandair announced that it would not be able to finalise the deal before the next shareholders meeting at the end of the week. The Financial Supervisory Authority briefly suspended trading of Icelandair’s stock the same day.
Fellow low-cost Icelandic Primera Air went bankrupt and shut down around payday and British carrier Monarch did the same last year, giving WOW workers good reason to worry.
Friday is the last business day of the month and is the standard pay day in Iceland. With these public reassurances from management, WOW Air employees can now breathe a little easier.
