The new Mayor of Reykjavík, Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, is still employed as the chairperson of the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities (SÍS). According to Vísir, she has not decided whether she’ll continue her role alongside her duties as mayor.

Heiða’s high salary has been in discussion of late, with media outlets reporting that her monthly salary as chair of SÍS increased by 50% since 2023, currently sitting at 870.000 ISK per month. In total, Heiða’s monthly salary as chair, mayor, and chairperson of the capital area fire department amounts to 3.8 million ISK.

Replying to Vísir, Heiða said that she had been elected for these roles and does not control her pay. Furthermore, she is paid the same as her predecessor, Einar Þorsteinsson, who dissolved the city’s governing coalition last February.
