The last ticket to this year’s Iceland Airwaves was sold before noon today. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as there’s a long-standing tradition of the festival running out of tickets.
Last year, the tickets sold out two weeks earlier than they did this year, but when we reached festival director Grímur Atlason, he didn’t seem bothered.
“We thought it would sell out three weeks ago, when we only had something like 200 tickets remaining,” he said. “The sales slowed down, but we weren’t worried.”
When asked if Björk pulling out in August had an impact on their ticket sales, Grímur didn’t want to infer anything. “If we still had a thousand tickets left when Airwaves started, maybe we would have panicked, but it all worked out in the end.”
This year there are 240 bands performing, out of which 72 are foreign and 168 are Icelandic. Check out the schedule here. For those that don’t have a ticket, there is also an off-venue that’s free of charge.
