Current leader of the Pirate Party, Birgitta Jónsdóttir, is going to keep on pushing for citizenship for famous whistleblower Edward Snowden, according to a recent Forbes interview. She also argues that making Snowden an Icelander would be better for the United States because of the ongoing propaganda war between the Kremlin and Washington.
The Pirate Party has been soaring in polls, measuring as Iceland’s largest party in March. In the interview, Birgitta responds — with a laugh — to the question of Iceland granting Snowden citizenship: “If I become the interior minister, that’s definitely happening.” She still acknowledged that according to Icelandic law, granting citizenship to Snowden would require approval by parliament.
Two years ago, six MPs put forth a proposal for Iceland to grant citizenship to Snowden to help him avoid espionage charges in his native United States. However, a majority voted against adding the proposal to the parliament’s agenda.
