Reykjavík Art Museum and City Hall have extended an open invitation to the unveiling of a mural by Sara Riel tomorrow afternoon.

Newly appointed mayor, Dagur B. Eggertsson, will unveil the mural, called ‘Feather’, at 3 pm Saturday 5 July at Asparfell 2-12 in Breiðholt, a suburb of Reykjavík.

The mural consists of 43 birds of 23 different species which come together to create a whole. Sara Riel has said the work is inspired by the surrounding neighbourhood where individuals with different backgrounds have come together to create a community. She told reykjavik.is that painting the mural had offered her a great opportunity to meet Breiðholt’s diverse community and discuss art.

The mural is a part of an initiative by Reykjavík City Hall to increase the amount of art in the city’s public spaces. The City Council has commissioned a total of 5 murals in Breiðholt by 4 different artists and 8 murals by young artists between 17-20 years old.

Sara Riel is a renowned street artist and last year she painted a mural that became a Grapevine cover. Check out the In The Making video below and our profile of Sara here.
