No one seems to know who created a poorly-placed parking spot for the disabled near Hlemmur, but it has been removed, and replaced with two new disabled parking spaces on the same block.

“I have to say that I don’t know how this parking space came to be,” Kolbrún Jónatansdóttir, the managing director of the Parking Space Fund, told Vísir. “This is just terrible to see. Not just because the meter, trash can and sign are all in the way, but also because the space is too small, and right up against the sidewalk.”

The parking space in question, as reported, has sparked criticism from the Organisation of Disabled in Iceland.

Ólafur Bjarnason, the Transportation Director for the City of Reykjavík, also said he had no explanation for how the parking space appeared.

“This has been this way all too long,” he told reporters. “This is not at all acceptable. That much is absolutely clear.”

The good news is the space has now been removed. Instead, two new parking spaces for the disabled have been created just west of the old spot, on the same block.
