More and more Icelanders are traveling abroad, according to a recent travel and tourism survey conducted by Media and Market Research (MMR).
As RÚV reports, approximately 63% of survey respondents had traveled abroad in 2012, a significant increase over the number who had taken a trip overseas in 2009 (44%). The majority of those traveling found themselves in North America or Europe.
Domestic travel wasn’t as popular in 2012 than in the preceding year. Sixty-seven percent of respondents took off throughout Iceland last year, whereas 75% has reportedly done so in 2011. The south of Iceland is the most popular destination for Icelanders taking part in a bit of homeland appreciation, with 63% of those who traveled domestically heading in that direction.
