Flavorwire has named solo artist Úlfur Hansson among this year’s “musical acts to watch”.
The pop culture website said of Úlfur (shown above with Kira Kira):
A former member of compatriot Jónsi’s touring band, Icelandic solo artist Úlfur Hansson’s debut album White Mountain got a release in Japan last year — he is, legitimately, Big In Japan — and it’s due out in the US in March via Western Vinyl. It’s a fascinating and beautiful piece of work, built around field recordings from around the world, disparate sounds that blend to create a world of their own. There’s also talk of a collaboration with the aforementioned Jónsi later in the year.
Úlfur has received positive reviews from Grapevine as well, in a performance with Kira Kira last October.
“Once inside Kaladón we were greeted by Úlfur, who in addition to playing alongside Kira Kira, was also the opening act this evening,” Clyde Bradford wrote. “Joined by various wind instruments and a guitarist, together they wound their way through an undulating ambience. The music shifted and swelled as the images on the screen above followed suit. You were never quite sure where the music would shift next, but even so, it remained beautiful and engaging. Nice.”
