If you’re one of those weird people who like to go out and get monstrously drunk to rave music without being punched in the face, the CCP annual Fanfest might appeal to you. For those of you not in the know, CCP Games is the developer behind Eve Online, one of the most respected and detailed massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) in existence. As luck would have it, the company originates from right here in ReykjavÌk, and have made it a habit for eight years to throw a party every March to celebrate their own awesome selves.
The party this year will feature German dance duo Booka Shade, Icelandic electro team FM Belfast, and lots and lots and lots of geeks getting their drink on.
To clarify that last sentence, allow me to note the important distinction between geeks, nerds and dorks. While a nerd is a person who is very well-versed in a particular subject (usually something general and well-publicized, like math, literature or electronics) and almost completely devoid of social skills, and a dork is that same charming social deficiency without any applicable knowledge, a geek is a different thing altogether. A geek is someone who, on the surface, seems like a normal, socially capable individual, if a tad reclusive, but is actually an encyclopaedic tome of information on a relatively useless and very specific subject, such as The Adventures of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, marine life in the Arctic Ocean, or heraldic emblems of 12th-century Austrian knights. Getting drunk with these people subsequently tends to result in some weird conversations, so come prepared.
