Move over Björk and Sigur Rós, a new Icelandic artist is making waves overseas. Black metal mavericks Misþyrming—whom we at the Grapevine have written a lot about—have just been announced as Roadburn Festival‘s 2016 Artist In Residence.
Artist in Residence? What does that mean? Well the band will be performing three sets, one each night. The first, titled ‘Algleymi’ (“Oblivion”), will be composed of entirely new material.
The second, ‘Úlfsmessa’ (“Wolf’s Mass”) is a bit more complicated. As per Roadburn’s announcement:
The second and most transcendent appearance, Úlfsmessa, will follow in the tradition the band first started at Iceland’s Eistnaflug Festival two years ago alongside members of the tightly-knit scene that surrounds the Vánagandr tape label. Joined by the Icelandic black metal and black metal-influenced ritual drone bands Naðra, NYIÞ and Grafir, Misþyrming will present an intense, immersive collaborative performance, ten members strong, that will both reaffirm and redefine any devotee’s commitment to black metal supremacy.
Finally, on the last night, the band will perform their debut album, ‘Söngvar elds og óreiðu,’ in its entirety.
Roadburn’s Artist In Residence has some impressive alumni: Enslaved, Circle, and Neige are just a few, so this is pretty big news, considering the band only released their debut album earlier this year.
Interested? Misþyrming will be playing at Airwaves, and will also undergo a short European tour in December. Give their album a spin—on vinyl, preferably—or check out their bandcamp here.
