In May 1816 a young woman sat near a log fire at Lord Byron’s Swiss estate and listened to German ghost stories. After a night of haunts, Lord Byron proposed that each of them around the fire write a ghost story of their own. And thus the story of Frankenstein sprang to life from the mind of 19-year-old Mary Shelley.
In 1931 her legendary story was adapted for the big screen. Frankenstein, directed by James Whale, was an instant hit. Before the movie was publicly released the crew had already started dreaming up a sequel, originally to be titled: The New Adventures of Frankenstein — The Monster Lives! Four years later the film was released as The Bride of Frankenstein, and has been recognized as an equal authority in the realm of classic horror as its predecessor.
It’s been 200 years since that wet Geneva night, but as we have learned from Shelley the dead are never really gone.
The Bride of Frankenstein shows tonight at Bío Paradís at 20:00. Its screening is part of the weeklong ‘Svartur September’ series of classic cult films.
