Happening This Weekend: Our Picks!

It’s DesignMarch! Yes, there’s a ton to do but here’s some events—both design and not design related—you definitely shouldn’t miss.

Friday, March 29th
Red Bull Music Presents: Afsakanir
21:00, Gamla Bíó, 4,500 ISK

Sultry smooth-talking crooner Auður serves up something you rarely see in hip-hop: pure sincerity. Last year, he dropped ‘AFSAKANIR’, his sophomore effort, which was nominated for 8 awards at this years Icelandic Music Awards. Currently travelling around the world writing for J-Pop artists in Tokyo, touring Europe, and working on his next album with Sony Records, Auður is an infectious performer you should take advantage of seeing. The ticket price is steep, yes, but the show will be worth it.

Saturday, March 30th
Kynjakokteill / Gender Cocktail
14:00, KEX Hostel, 1,500 ISK

Imagine a magical alternate world where all your preconceived notions of gender are erased. There are lights, music, art and fashion, and the drinks are flowing. Welcome to the Gender Cocktail, a new event during DesignMarch that opens up a space for the lines of gender to fade away into a daytime drag party. The theme is the Garden of Eden, going back in time before the two genders of Adam and Eve were defined, so dress your best, get ready to say “Yaas!” and indulge in a gender cocktail. Oh wait, did we forget? Drag-súgur will be there to entertain you all day long. Read more about it here. Tickets are 1,500 ISK but if you dress in drag it is free!

Sunday, March 31st
DesignMarch: Bioplastic Skin
13:00-18:00, Gallery Port, Free!

Following the trends of last year—when she presented a series of clothing and furniture made of horse hides—designer Valdís Steinarsdóttir now tackles the issue of waste generated in the meat and plastic industries. ‘Bioplastic Skin’, her new invention, which will be presented at this year’s DesignMarch, uses animal hides to create a plastic-like material which can then be used to package meat products from the same animal. It might sound gross, and well, it is. Check out an article about it here. Warning: This is the last day of DesignMarch. Get ready for tears.
