The first weeks of January—we’re all broke, cold, and desperate for entertainment. But never fear, dear readers, here are your not-to-miss events for the week of January 7th. You’ve no excuse!
Monday, January 7th
20:00, Tjarnarbíó, 2,900 to 4,500 ISK
Based on the famous Icelandic saga ‘The Saga of Gísli Súrsson,’ this award-winning play follows the tragic tale of Gísli Súrsson, who—spoiler alert—dies in the end. Before that, though, he does a lot of heroic stuff. We won’t tell you anything more. If you can’t make this night, the play will also be presented on January 14th, 22nd and February 5th, 12th, and 25th.
Tuesday, January 8th
Versatile Uprising Opening
18:00, Until 26th February, Wind & Weather Window Gallery, Free!
In this interactive exhibit, a choreography of light and sound creates a diorama of mysterious imagery, as black shapeless sculptures collide with geometrical LED sticks. Free free to move your hand in front of a sensor to control the lights and explore the landscape. This is the first interactive exhibition that this gallery has ever had, so make sure to stop by. The Wind & Weather Window Gallery is open all day everyday—as it is a window outside—but the official opening will take place at 18:00.
Wednesday, January 9th
20:00, Bíó Paradís, 1,600 ISK
Expect heavy metal, grave robbing, and Viking battles in this film, which follows Turo, a Finnish man in the most unknown metal band in Finland, as he tries to get to a metal festival in Norway. RogerEbert.com called it a, “crowdpleaser,” and, “probably the only film you’ll see this year with a crowd-surfing corpse.” Basically, it’s ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ with Amon Amarth. This will be the only screening of this film in Reykjavík, so don’t miss it!
Thursday, January 10th
21:00, Mengi, 2,000 ISK
If techno violin is your thing—and it definitely should be—check out the newly formed duo Geigen. This’ll be their first show ever and they promise a musical voyage across the universe where violin waves coalesce with electric ways and stardust. Basically, a black hole of beauty. The duo consists of Gígja Jónsdóttir and Pétur Eggertson. While the show starts at 21:00, doors will be open at 20:30.
