From Iceland — Icelander Nearing The South Pole On Foot

Icelander Nearing The South Pole On Foot

Published January 15, 2013

An Icelander who has been traveling solo, on foot, to the South Pole is near her destination, and has been blogging about her journey along the way.
Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir (shown above on the Greenland ice shelf with Valdimar Halldórsson) began her journey to the South Pole 56 days ago at the time of this reporting. She is providing regular blog updates of her journey, in Icelandic and English, and has most recently reported on some of the hardships she has had to endure.
Currently, she is recovering from abdominal pectoris, which has been causing vomiting and a lack of appetite. Only 55 kilometres away from her goal, she reports that she is able to eat and drink and will be ready to head out again. She estimates she will arrive at the South Pole in about three days’ time.
Often times, she will wax poetic on her journey, posting last Saturday:

I woke up this morning and it was snowing and windy but to my surprise, the sun came out and the wind slowed down. The silence here is totally amazing and so it the beautiful landscape. I have covered 1/3 of this latitude. The travel conditions are still very challenging so I’ve not been able to ski full speed. I managed to cover 20 kms today and am expecting similar distance in the next few days. The idea that my expedition is soon to be over is still very far away in my mind.. Perhaps I’m just starting to feel like home here 🙂
